1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible - $253k

Shelby no. 03841. Matching numbers. 428 CI Cobra Jet V-8 engine. Factory 4-speed manual transmission. Red exterior. White soft top. Rear spoiler. Shelby 10-spoke alloy wheels. Elite Marti Report. Copy of dealer invoice. The "KR" in GT500KR stands for "King of the Road". It was a marketing ploy by Carrol Shelby. The 1968 Shelby GT500KR was the first GT500 to feature the Cobra Jet engine. The 7.0-liter (428 cubic inch) Cobra Jet V8 put out nearly 400 gross horsepower. A total of 933 GT500KR coupes and 518 convertibles were produced in 1968.

This example appeared at Mecum.
The King of the Road set impressive times for that era, making 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, a quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds, onto a top speed of 140 mph.
