1968 Shelby GT500KR Fastback

Shelby no. 03033. One of 1,053 GT500KR fastbacks produced for 1968. 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine. 4174 Holley carburetor. Toploader 4-speed transmission. 3.00 Traction-Lok differential. Rebuilt double A-arm suspension. Power steering. Power brakes. Wimbledon White with Blue rocker striping. Tinted glass. Tilt steering column. Shelby 10-spoke wheels. The KR stands for “King of the Road,” a name that Carroll Shelby famously stole from General Motors. The Shelby GT500’s midyear 1968 engine update to Ford’s new 428 Cobra Jet big-block was laughably rated at 335 HP, 25 less than the previous 428 Police Interceptor.
With 427 medium-riser cylinder heads, 390GT cam, Holley 4-barrel carb and high-flow exhaust manifold, it was a performance engine. This Wimbledon White GT500KR underwent a concours restoration retaining the original sheet metal and fiberglass. One of 450 produced with factory air, the KR was delivered new to Kenray Ford in Dallas.
The car appears at Mecum's
