1930 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Coupe by Murphy - $1.1m

The Murphy convertible coupe was the most popular single body style constructed on the Duesenberg Model J chassis. Today it remains a true classic, and examples seldom come up for sale. One with the superb known history of J-143 — the “Jake the Barber” Model J, is a rare thing.

J-143 is a car whose history begins in gangland and ends among great collectors of automotive history. The car was originally owned by underworld figure Jake “the Barber” Factor.
The Model J was grand enough to capture the intended market, America’s rich and famous. No two Duesenbergs were precisely alike. The chassis alone sold for $8,500.

The eight-cylinder in-line engine, with twin overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and 420 cubic inches produced 265 hp at 4200 rpm. The car was the most advanced and powerful available.
A multiple national AACA, CCCA, and ACD Club award winner, this example made $1.1m against an estimate of $1.4m to $1.8m.
