101 examples of the Mercury Cougar GT-E were produced in 1968. Of those, 64 were fitted with a 427ci V8 engine and the remaining 37 packed a 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet. The engine was the one Ford used to homologate its NASCAR racing program. This Cougar GT-E might be one of the finest examples of its species. No part was ignored in a meticulously thorough rotisserie restoration.

1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 - $28,600

1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 presented as Lot S152 at Mecum Indianapolis. Oldsmobile’s premiere muscle car of the 1960s, the 442 was the choice upscale muscle car. The 442 started out as a performance package for the 1964 F85 and Cutlass. Starting in 1964, “442” stood for a 4-speed manual, a 4-bbl carburetor, and dual exhausts – all of which were standard.

By 1970 the 442 had Oldsmobile’s big-block 455 V8 which was rated at 365 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. The W-30’s advertised horsepower figure was underrated by Oldsmobile and was over 400hp. The W-30 package included a performance tuned Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor, a high performance cam, and a lightweight free-flow aluminum intake manifold. A set of high-performance cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds completed the picture. The W-30 had enough juice to frighten most drivers when the pedal hit the floor.

The 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 is widely considered the best Oldsmobile muscle car ever built.

1967 Shelby GT500 Fastback - $214k

The GT500 was added to the line up in 1967 and came equipped with a "Ford Cobra" FE Series 428 cu in (7.0 L) V8 with two 600 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetors sitting atop a mid-rise aluminum intake manifold. Other upgrades included Holley BJ/BK carburetors, manifolds, RUGS-1 transmission, 3.50 Traction-Lok rear end, braking system with KH calipers and drums, a louvered hood, inboard driving lights, optional 10-spoke wheels with Goodyear tires.

2048 Shelby GT500 Fastbacks were produced in 1967. This top end example made $214k against an estimate of $150k to $200k.

1970 Dodge Challenger T/A

SCCA rules required Dodge to sell production editions of it's track car, and Dodge responded with the Challenger T/A. Race cars ran a destroked 305ci version of a 340ci V-8. It had a four-barrel carb and 440 bhp. Street T/As kept the 340, but upped that with a trio of two-barrel Holleys on top of an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold. The T/A carried the same 290 bhp rating as four-barrel 340s, though that was actually closer to 350 bhp.

The T/A wasn't a consistent SCCA winner, and its street sibling wasn't a road racer, succumbing to debilitating understeer around corners. Only 989 examples left the factory with a 4-speed manual gearbox. This car is finished in Go Mango Orange. The car appears at Mecum.

1967 Chevrolet SS 427 - $118k

2,124 Chevrolet SS 427s were produced in 1967 with an original list price‎ of ‎$4,906.

Introduced in 1966, the L-72 427-cu.in. V-8 engine was rated at 425hp, a number that exists somewhere between seriously underrated and ludicrous. The first high-performance Mark IV engines, issued in 1965, were 396-cu.in., yet were rated at the same 425hp.

An 'ordinary' SS 427 is special. The SS 427 was only offered from 1967 through 1969 and remains respected. This example crossed the block at Mecum's.

1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 ‘Periscopica’

One of 158 Countach LP400 ‘Periscopicas’ made, chassis 1120064 is presented in its original Blu Metallizzato livery. The LP400 Countach was unveiled in prototype form at the 1973 Geneva Auto Show and entered production the following year. Featuring scissor doors, origami-like bodywork, a periscope-style rearview mirror, and a four-liter V-12, the original Countach is the definitive Italian supercar of the 1970s.

The word ‘Periscopica’ refers to the roof mounted periscope used by the early Countach to provide some semblance of rearward visibility – the channel in the roof reflected light into the rear-vision mirror which gave the driver some vague idea of what was behind him. The thundering 3929cc DOHC V12 was capable of 375hp at 8,000 rpm through a 5-speed transmission, 4-wheel independent suspension with stopping power provided by 4-wheel disc brakes. This example appears at Gooding and carries an estimate of $900k to $1.1m.

1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible

The full-size Oldsmobile 88 was produced until 1999 and became the top-selling line for 24 years.

The 1958 Oldsmobile lineup included the entry-level Dynamic 88, mid-level Super 88, and the 98. The Super 88 shared its V8 engine with the 98. It was a 371 cubic-inch 'Golden Rocket' engine equipped with a Quadra-Jet four-barrel carburetor that delivered 305 horsepower at 4,600 RPM.
